OVERVIEW
First Moves Scrimmages are the perfect next step for kids learning the game! These fun, unrated practice events let students try out tournament-style play in a supportive, totally relaxed environment. Our Charlotte Chess Center staff is right there to help kids learn the ropes, build confidence, and just enjoy playing chess with kids their own age.

WHO SHOULD PLAY
This event is designed specifically for unrated players in Pre-K through 8th grade (ages 13 and under). It is the perfect fit for:

Students currently enrolled in our school programs.

Students taking our Fundamentals level classes.

Children who have played online or at home with family, but have never played in a formal chess tournament.
- Players who do have a US Chess rating, as long as it is under 300.
SCHEDULE
Suggested Arrival Time: 9:45 am
Round 1: 10:00 am
Round 2: ASAP
Round 3: ASAP
End Time: ~12:00 pm
Non-elimination. Every student gets to play all 3 games, regardless of whether they win, lose, or draw.
SECTIONS
Grades K-2
Grades 3-5
Grades 6-8
To keep games fair and fun, students are divided into three separate sections and will only be paired against kids in their own age group.
GAME PACE
Each player receives 10 minutes on their clock to complete the game.
PRIZES
Everyone goes home feeling proud! Medals are awarded to all participants based on their final score (Win = 1 point, Draw = 0.5 points, Loss = 0 points).

*Ready for Rated Play: Students who earn a Gold Medal have shown they are ready for a fun new challenge! The free US Chess membership is our way of helping them take that next exciting step into our standard rated tournaments.
